WELCOME!

Hi! My name is Bailey L., and I'm a junior at Emma Willard School in Troy, NY. As my signature project, I am working in the lab of a professor at a local college. I will be assisting in experiments done in the lab, and learning about the research process as a whole. The experiments I will be working on pertain to motion sickness and nausea, as well as the gastrointestinal system as a whole. We will look at how psychology affects physical health by measuring things like electrogastrograms (EGGs) and skin conductivity, in addition to giving surveys to participants. I will get to observe and take part in all steps of the research process, from data collection to data analysis to (hopefully!) presenting findings. Thank you for visiting my portfolio and I hope you enjoy looking at my project!

This is an instrument called a drum. It is used to simulate motion and therefore induce motion sickness in participants.

Timeline of Project

September:

  • Complete Institutional Review Board training for research on human subjects

October:

  • Learn more about mind-body interactions in general through resources provided by professor

  • Start to learn about the details of the experiment we will be performing in the lab

November:

  • Get into the lab for the first time and learn about all the different aspects

  • Learn about the data analysis process and tools used in this step of research

December:

  • Continue reading about past experiments done

January:

  • Work in the lab entering past studies' data

February:

  • Start data collection

March:

  • Continue collecting data

  • Learn how to run an experiment by myself

April:

  • Data entry will start

  • Possibly start data analysis and statistical tests

  • Learn how to perform data analysis and statistical tests

May:

  • Continue with data analysis and statistical tests

  • Put together presentation of the work done throughout the year and present to the school

Summer:

  • Continue working in the lab analysing data
